A2 Size in Pixels
A2 is a large poster size — twice the area of A3 — used for posters, presentations and wall displays. Here are the pixel dimensions you need for a full-bleed A2 image.
A2 is 420 × 594 mm (42.0 × 59.4 cm, 16.54 × 23.39 in). At300 PPI — the standard for high-quality printing — a full-bleed A2 needs4961 × 7016 pixels — roughly 34.8 megapixels.
| Resolution | Pixels |
|---|---|
| 300 PPI | 4961 × 7016 px |
| 240 PPI | 3969 × 5613 px |
| 200 PPI | 3307 × 4677 px |
| 150 PPI | 2480 × 3508 px |
Pixel dimensions are computed from the physical size of A2 (420 × 594 mm) at each resolution.
A2 (420 × 594 mm) at common resolutions
| Resolution | Pixels | Physical size |
|---|---|---|
| 300 PPI | 4961 × 7016 px | 42.0 × 59.4 cm |
| 240 PPI | 3969 × 5613 px | 42.0 × 59.4 cm |
| 200 PPI | 3307 × 4677 px | 42.0 × 59.4 cm |
| 150 PPI | 2480 × 3508 px | 42.0 × 59.4 cm |
Pixel counts are computed from the real physical dimensions of A2 (420 × 594 mm) at each resolution — they are not hard-coded. To get these values for any other print size, use the calculator above.
Why the pixel count changes with PPI
A2's physical size is fixed — 420 × 594 mm — but the number of pixels needed to fill that space depends on the resolution you choose.
PPI (pixels per inch) tells you how many pixels fit into one inch of print. Multiply the physical width in inches by the PPI and you get the pixel width. At 16.54 inches wide × 300 PPI you get 4961 pixels; at 150 PPI you get 2480 pixels — half as many, spread over the same 420 mm of paper.
The table above uses the real physical dimensions of A2 at each resolution. To get these values for any other print size, use the calculator above or the DPI / PPI calculator.
A2 portrait vs landscape
In portrait orientation (the default), A2 is 4961 × 7016 pixels at 300 PPI. In landscape orientation it's 7016 × 4961 pixels — the same pixel count, just rotated. A2 is one of the most common landscape poster sizes for presentations and wall displays.
A2's ISO 216 ratio of 1:1.414 is used in both orientations. The width is always 420 mm and the height is always 594 mm, whichever way you hold the sheet.
Can my image be printed on A2?
Compare your image's pixel dimensions to the values above. If your image is at least 4961 × 7016 pixels, it covers A2 at 300 PPI without any upscaling. If it's smaller, the effective PPI drops — the print may still look fine from a distance, but will appear softer up close.
The quickest way to check is tocheck your image with the Image Print Size Calculator. Upload your photo and it shows the exact resolution at A2 — plus whether any cropping is needed to fit the A2 aspect ratio. Images are processed entirely in your browser and never uploaded.
Practical details
A2 at 300 PPI needs 4961 × 7016 pixels — roughly 35 MP. At 240 PPI,3969 × 5613 pixels is still high quality. At 200 PPI,3307 × 4677 pixels works well for most A2 prints. At 150 PPI,2480 × 3508 pixels is usually acceptable for a poster that will be viewed from arm's length or more.
Because A2's ratio (1:1.414) is close to, but not exactly, the 3:2 of a typical photo, a full-bleed A2 print from a camera photo will usually need a small crop on the longest edges. A landscape 3:2 photo printed portrait A2 loses roughly 48% of its overall width — about 24% from each side — and a landscape 4:3 photo loses about 42% overall (about 21% per side). A portrait 4:5 photo (width:height = 4:5) is closest to A2's shape and needs only about a 3% trim overall.
A2 is a portrait poster size. It's used for presentations, wall posters, event signage and art prints. At this size, resolution matters more than usual — aim for at least 240 PPI if you'll view the print up close.
The next size down is A3 size in pixels — half the area with the same aspect ratio. For a smaller step, A4 size in pixels covers the everyday document size. For a quick resolution check on any image, the print quality checker gives a verdict for the exact size you're planning, and the image print size calculator shows whether your specific photo is large enough for an A2 print.
